Key Results (= Functions): represent the decomposition of your project’s purpose into several Key Results (Functions): project sub-objectives or major modules/ deliverables to be built, each with their own main functionality and essential to meet project purpose/ key objective.
Examples of Functions for a car rental IT system project:
* Rental reservation management: function for customers to book a car and rental company to manage rental bookings.
* Billing system: function to create invoice to customers, handle invoice payment via credit card provider and management reconciliation of payment, deposit and refund.
* Fleet management system: function for rental company to manage rental vehicles coming in & out of rental fleet, including cleaning, maintenance and reparation.
How many Key Results/ Functions should I have in my project?
Typically 10-15 Key Results (Functions) are observed for all projects, event for the most complex ones.
What is NOT a Function? Anything that is not an essential necessary part of the successful achievement of the project purpose/ Key Objective.
Read again the description of your project purpose and ask yourself: Can the project still be a success without it? If answer is yes, then this is NOT a Key Result (Function).
